You want to go out on a date with me? Because I will hold you to that once this is all over.

My stomach twisted with a mixture of anger and butterflies, and I threw the phone aside again, refusing to answer his text.

Thirteen

“Is there any reason you’re throwing a temper tantrum in here, Charlotte?” Gamma asked. “You’ll wake the rest of the guests.” Gamma used the butt of her rifle to shut the door, then locked it behind herself.

“Just Goode,” I said. “Annoying me as usual. He’s keeping the town on lockdown even though it’s possibly the most… idiotic thing he could do. How are we supposed to survive as a town when he won’t let anyone do anything?”

“Take a breath, Charlotte,” Gamma said, setting the shotgun down. “You’re going to pass out. Besides, I have something I need to discuss with you.”

I sat back down on the bed. Sunlight meowed at me, and I reached out and twined my fingers through his fur, appreciating the sense of calm that it brought me. Gamma was right. I couldn’t afford to freak out over Goode when we had the case to worry about, and the escaped prisoner who’d been sighted in town.

The fact that they’d thought he’d run off was another issue entirely.

Gamma took a deep breath. “I haven’t been honest with you.”

I raised my eyebrows. “I thought you would have no trouble keeping things from me.”

“No need to be sassy, Charlotte,” Gamma said. “I’ve had a change of heart. I didn’t want to talk to you about this, I wanted it to be a surprise, but I had time to think while I was putting the inn under lockdown.”

I waited for her to continue, stroking Sunlight and enjoying his purrs.

“I’m going to need your help,” she said. “Two heads are better than one, and I can’t expect you to trust me when you know there is something that I’m keeping from you.”

I nodded.

“I want to work with you seamlessly because I do trust your spy abilities, even though you might not think it.”

My grandmother wasn’t one for affection or even words of encouragement unless they were absolutely necessary. She was hardened after years of being a spy, and I had witnessed that firsthand as a child. I didn’t blame her for it. I had spent most of my life hero-worshiping her, and tried to follow in her footsteps as closely as possible.

“Charlotte, we need to ensure that this case is solved within the week,” Gamma said. “We have a special guest coming for Christmas who is of the utmost importance.”

“Which guest?” I asked, surprised by the direction the conversation had taken. Gamma had been keeping a special guest from me? That was hardly a big secret.

Gamma hesitated. “Delta. Delta Mission, your cousin.”

My eyes widened. “The… the operative who’s on the run? I thought she—”

“I have wanted to know her as my relative for many years now,” Gamma said. “But it’s always been too risky. She had to maintain her cover, and contacting me was inadvisable.
